a filmmaker can depict how it seemed to characters, without making an editorial comment that he/she/they believe that to be desirable, or wise. this is the concept of the 'flawed character'. point-of-view also speaks on this point. when a creator makes a work of art, say, about a serial killer, do we believe that the creator is promoting sociopathy? when a stage production was created called HAMILTON, did we believe it advanced the belief that alexander hamilton and his associates were american negroes? it was a grand opportunity for those black actors, but i think not that (hopefully) anyone in the audiences went on with their lives, believing that hamilton was a black man. (and that, anyone now who denies this as a facet of historical reality, is, patently, a racist), the fact is, southerners who were rich had servants who were black. when we 'sanitize' this, then we are ignoring what was american reality, which's result is to make us ignorant, and weak, not strong and proud.
