WOW. And I thought “Illuminae” was spectacular. I can’t decide which one I like better now. I didn’t think anything could match book one, but boy, I was wrong. I also thought that we’d still be following Ezra and Kady, and...I was also wrong about that, too. But I did enjoy the new cast of characters (Hanna, Nik, etc.), and seeing all of the characters from “Illuminae” show up again. As always, their chemistry seems to work perfectly, and they were written so well that they almost seemed lifelike. Although I knew it was going to happen eventually, I didn’t quite like the relationship between Nik and Hanna. They just seemed like polar opposites, and even though I’m kind of a sucker for enemy-to-lover relationships in YA (explains why I like “Carry On” and “Heart of Iron” so much...), I didn’t think that this one would work out. But the pair did end up growing on me, and now I love them almost as much as I love Ezra and Kady. <3 Also, can we all take a moment to appreciate Ella? She’s probably my favorite. ////(ツ)\\\\ (I tried.) As with “Illuminae”, there was clearly so much time, effort, and attention to detail put into this novel. Once again, I felt myself hanging on the edge of my seat, heart thumping in my chest while I rooted for all of the lovable (and sometimes not-so-lovable) characters. One aspect that stood out to me, though, was Marie Lu’s illustrations for Hanna’s journal entries. I’ve always been a huge fan of her work, and the fact that she can write dozens of splendid books AND make equally splendid (and adorable) artwork astounds me. I admire her so much. If “Illuminae” was A New Hope, “Gemina” is The Empire Strikes Back; it’s got everything that I loved about the predecessor, and so much more. :)
