A hard book for me to rate - until the last 25 pages or so, I was considering giving a 5 star. This book had me on the edge of my seat wondering if they would find Alice dead or alive, I was totally unable to predict who'd killed Nevvie, I loved the characters and found them all to be real and believable (even Serenity, the psychic and definitely Jenna), and I super-loved the information about the elephants! So,I was considering a 5 star for a Jodi Picoult book... quite a change because in the two books of hers that I read previously, I found her predictable (and in my opinion, contrived) twist at the end disappointing. So... SPOILER ALERT........ do not read further if you haven't finished. I can't believe I did not see it coming this time? I was completely gob-smacked and deflated at the ending and feel cheated... since I felt that this book was so well written and captivating, I totally forgot that Picault always likes to have these crazy sucker-punch endings so I was sucker-punched and didn't like it.... seriously, having it turn out that most of the characters are ghosts makes the book, in my opinion, just a take-off of the movie Sixth Sense... a very contrived ending just to make an impact. If it wasn't that I found the book, right up until the ending, worthy of a 4.5 or more, I would have given this book a 1 star.
