My love of "To Kill A Mockingbird" doesn't diminish my appreciation of this earlier work. It should be considered a companion piece focused more on time, setting, community vs. individual personality. Many members of Council's within southern communities were often people of professional and civic esteem despite their white racist ideology. I read this as a companion piece.
