Unusual juxtapositions grabbed my attention and kept me page-turning – properly correct language of a century and a half ago uttered without the bat of an eye in the midst of blood baths and gunned down bodies; grittily real warts-and-all characters, one of whom is a sensitive, introspective type who gains insight along his hired-gun way; humour and gentleness that comes at a reader-cringing moments of violence. de Witt develops his two main characters masterfully with copious dialogue (as if he were laying the groundwork for a screenplay), and the plentiful details of their journey make for high realism … never mind the historical facts. I was fully engaged.
