Boring, dull and nothing more than a bit of juvenile idiocy. How did actors of this stature agree to star in such an uninteresting and trite movie?

From the opening hackneyed shot - a long alley of ancient oaks bedecked with Spanish moss, with the fog machine puffing out wafts of evening mist - we might suspect there's trouble ahead. And there is. But along the way Sophia Coppola makes sure we grasp a shocking fact: that girls and women actually do want men to find them attractive, to single them out, even (gasp!) to make love to them. It is simply delightful to imagine the furious reaction of a feminist audience to these hard truths. But the ladies should grit their teeth and stick it out, for our coven of mutually jealous Southern belles will exact a grim revenge on the serpent who entered their garden. A bemused Colin Farrell stands out as the wounded Yankee who stumbles into this world of women. Nicole Kidman, normally a fatal presence in any movie, is quite good as the stern headmistress who emits none-too-subtle sighs as she cleans our intruder's wounds. Kirsten Dunst is deliberately colourless as the dowdy teacher who also longs for (and briefly gets) her man. Overall, a swing and a miss, but with a bit of fun too.

Bored out of my mind.

I've never seen the original or read the book, but considering the star power of the cast and my general liking of Sofia Coppola's other work, I gave this one a shot. I normally love slow-burn thrillers and gothic atmosphere, but this movie drags mainly because the characters aren't terribly interesting. Everyone felt hollow, sometimes even one-dimensional.

The lighting was extremely dark, to the point of distraction; I think Coppola and her cinematographer were trying to go for a Barry Lyndon style of naturalistic lighting, but in that movie you could at least SEE what was in the frame. It's unfortunate, since the sets and costumes are quite lovely.

While there are some moments of tension and dark humor, nothing ever quite gels. By the end, I was left cold and uninterested. Such a shame, since the story has potential and Nicole Kidman wrings the most out of her role. I need to get my hands on the 1971 original.

Somewhat boring. Stick with the original, much better.

Not a bad movie, per se, but the original, with Clint Eastwood, has a much more finely honed finesse, revealing the story and characters with greater edge and/or subtlety, and a more threatening sense of danger and suspense.

Seems like people either loved this or hated it. I found it interesting and I kept thinking about it after I watched it. I thought it was beautifully filmed and I loved the setting. I didn't find it boring or slow like some reviewers. I felt it definitely showed the tension between the females vying for the attention of the injured Corporal, who they were caring for. And, it was dark & twisty. By the end, I was saying "what the . . . ?!". I haven't read the book or seen the original movie, so I didn't know what was going to happen. I recommend it, and now want to watch the original.

I haven't read the story but the movie was well done and the acting was good.

Considering that Nicole Kidman and Sofia Coppola were involved in this film, I'd expect better. That was about two hours of my life I'll never get back. Slow and very forgettable.

I read your comments and watched it anyways, stupid of me. Boring, boring, boring, whoa that turned grim didn't it. If it wasn't for other comments I'd have thought my TV was dying, too. Condolences to the next guy on the waiting list.
