I really enjoyed this YA fantasy inspired by ancient Chinese court culture. This first book in the series centres around the Empress Hesina's quest to bring her father's murderer to justice. This book was started by He when she was younger than her main character. She began writing fan-fiction in high school. As teen advocate, this knowledge made the book even more special.

Overall plot and world-building is interesting, but it felt so disjointed and not fleshed out enough. The main character, Hesina, is always so mad that she gets annoying. I felt that this got published a bit too early and should have had more editing. It's definitely set up for a sequel, which I wouldn't mind reading, but only if the writing style improves.

I did enjoy reading it and felt that it was exciting, so if you can look past the sometimes confusing parts where Hesina seems to just be running around all alone in underground tunnels, you might like it.

A Must-Read Young Adult pick. This beautiful Chinese-inspired fantasy debut is full of plot twists and is getting much love from librarians, booksellers and bloggers.
