Although the events in The Boy on the Bridge happen before those in The Girl with All the Gifts, I'd still recommend reading The Girl first. I think the characters are somewhat more captivating, and although The Boy tells a complete, well-rounded narrative, it best serves as a back-story to the first novel, rather than a story unto itself. There are a few moments in The Boy that feel slightly too convenient in their attempt to set up events and circumstances that will later take place in The Girl. That being said, I was happy to learn more about this fascinating virus that M.R. Carey has created - he has gone to Star-Trekkian-lengths to explain its function in a scientifically, morphologically believable fashion. And, The Boy plants that crucial seed of an idea that there may be humans who can hold the infection at bay, a concept that is explored more deeply in The Girl with All the Gifts.

Set in the same bleak post-apocalyptic world as *The Girl With All The Gifts,* this prequel follows a group of stern soldiers and clever scientists seeking a cure for the deadly plague. Although the characters are not as interesting as those in the first book, and the plot often lacks tension, I was still drawn into this well-told story.

This book was as amazing as the first, hitting all the right notes of human despair and hope that zombie books sometimes overlook. No one is sacred, no character is safe, and it's thrilling.
