Celebrating its 75th anniversary, John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men remains one of America's most widely read and beloved novels. Here is Steinbeck's dramatic adaptation of his novel-as-play, which received the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play in 1937-1938 and has featured a number of actors who have played the iconic roles of George and Lennie on stage and film, including James Earl Jones, John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. From the Nobel Prize-winning author of The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden , this classic story of an unlikely pair, two migrant workers in California during the Great Depression who grasp for their American Dream, profoundly touches readers and audiences alike. George and his simple-minded friend Lenny dream, as drifters will, of a place to call their own--a couple of acres and a few pigs, chickens, and rabbits back in Hill Country where land is cheap. But after they come to work on a ranch in the fertile Salinas Valley of California, their hopes, like "the best laid schemes o'mice an' men," begin to go awry.

Of Mice and Men also represents an experiment in form, as Steinbeck described his work, "a kind of playable novel, written in novel form but so scened and set that it can be played as it stands." A rarity in American letters, it achieved remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films.

A true American Classic, I'd forgotten the story, since I last read it in high school. Gary Sinise does an outstanding job in narration, great voice characters. A very moving and sad story.

I really enjoyed reading this book as part of my school's summer book club.

How is it that a book like "Of Mice and Men" can be rated "One Star" on the KCLS web site? All the reviews on the KCLS web site are very positive. The book is considered an American Classic and one of the finest works of John Steinbeck. If this is being done as a prank, I am at a loss to see the humor in it. There is something that you can do if you are like me and adore "Of Mice and Men". You can write a comment on the book and leave a star rating on the KCLS web site. Right now we are left disrespecting one of our greatest authors and his work. I is a sad commentary that KCLS Description says "Of Mice and Men was John Steinbeck's first masterpiece. We don't give one star ratings to "masterpieces"!

I had always wanted to read this, especially after having read another two of his books. When I saw the audiobook at the library I grabbed it. I really didn't know what it was about at all, and found the two men, George and Lenny fascinating.
Even though you aren't given a lot of information, you get a real sense of place and time in this novel. In the environment of today, Lenny would have been in special classes as a child, and given tools to use to help him function in society. Here, he had his Aunt Clara and George and both were limited in the help they could provide. Society is both more accepting and less understanding of Lenny and his limitations and quirks.
The hunger of the men for a real home, something that was their own felt very real.
This is a sad and haunting story, about society, friendships, and love. I was weeping as I drove by the end.

Such a great story and a pleasure to listen to. Steinbeck is a great writer and Gary Sinise did an excellent job narrating it. This production is very short - just 3 hours. A really entertaining way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

A classic story read by an amazing voice. The multitalented Gary Sinise added so much to this telling of the story known and loved for generations.
