A New York Times Bestseller!

A year has passed since the Tournament. Fletcher and Ignatius have been locked away in Pelt's dungeons, but now they must face trial at the hands of the Inquisition, a powerful institution controlled by those who would delight in Fletcher's downfall.

The trial is haunted by ghosts from the past with shocking revelations about Fletcher's origins, but he has little time to dwell on them; the graduating students of Vocans are to be sent deep into the orc jungles to complete a dangerous mission for the king and his council. If they fail, the orcish armies will rise to power beyond anything the Empire has ever seen.

With loyal friends Othello and Sylva by his side, Fletcher must battle his way to the heart of Orcdom and save Hominum from destruction . . . or die trying, in this sequel to The Novice by Taran Matharu.

I absolutely loved the first book and this second one is a worthy addition to the series. I made sure to request the third book right away because I cannot get enough of this world. The characters are funny and believable and the addition of the demons definitely adds another level of depth and complexity to the story. Many authors might not have handled it as well, but Taran Matharu does it beautifully. I recommend this series to anyone who likes fantasy or is wanting to get into fantasy.

This second installment of Matharu's series lays out all the history and information about Vocans and the entire cast you've already met, as well as future characters. The battle for the world is upon Fletcher, and this riveting tale will keep you on the edge of your seat--and impatient for the next installment!

I really enjoyed reading this book and could not put it down. But, I felt that the beginning was very drawn out and did not contain anything that was really relevant to the rest of the story (except.... SPOILER ALERT... that Fletcher was a noble). The beginning seemed a bit like page filler to me.

"They loped out of the gloom like a pack of wolves. Scores of orcs, lean, muscular giants with hunched shoulders and heavy brows, puffing great gouts of steaming breath in the chill night air. The short tusks jutting from their lower lips gleamed white in the lantern light, and they held their clubs and axes aloft as they ran."
