in some of the early scenes, such as when the trio are walking into a shopmart, evan rachel wood looks like Page's mother, she is so much taller than the Canadian actress. Wood spends much time practicing her ballet in front of multiple mirrors. I don't think the film got what the book was saying. A missed independent -film opportunity. Not bad, but just no oomph to it, at all. It was nice they slept with his body, in the forest, after being unable to save him (after a chainsaw accident).

A different view of a possible 'apocalypse', more 'real' instead of zombies appearing. Some may find it slow, but it's more about learning to survive and supporting each other. Not sure it was totally a smart thing to do at the end.

Good drama that focuses on how one family deals with a massive power outage and isolation.

Super dumb ending. It wasted the good performances of the two actresses.

The only reason I gave this two stars is because the acting was good. The plot and script were horrible. I have not read the book and after watching this I have no desire to ever read the book. I just could not get into it. About 1/2 through I just started forwarding to the next scene and it never got any better and stayed as mind numbing boring from the first scene to the very last. It really could have been much better.

This could have been a really good movie; unfortunately it's only mediocre. Too bad. The basic plot is one lots of us might need to know about in a decade or two. The book was better in that it let the younger daughter grow up with a real connection with the forest and its plants and animals that surely would have been the case in real life. It was hard to connect with the older daughter, and in this film, hard to connect with either of them in such shallow performances. The dancer and the father just telephoned it in.
If you are intrigued by the plot and theme, try reading the book by the same name; it might register higher.

Ellen Page & Evan Rachel Wood are both excellent actors and amazing women. Really a gripping story and a well-done movie.

Good, if disturbing movie about two young women trying to survive when civilization breaks down in the near future. Read the book, as well, and I think the movie is actually better.

Pretty good movie. Some harsh comments here considering Canadian lead actress and shot locally in Campbell River. Judge for yourself.

Laughable entry into the post-apocalyptic genre- and it's quite boring.
Since there are people who don't understand what the term ' post apocalyptic ' means here's the dictionary definition: " denoting or relating to the time following a nuclear war or other catastrophic event. " This definition fits precisely for this underwhelming film.

What's happening in town?
-People are getting sick. There's no water filtration. I thought you'd died when you stopped coming to town.
-No. We ran out of gas.
Everyone's run out of gas. There's no gas, there's no electricity, there's no transportation, there's no phones, there's no Internet. It's the wild fucking west out there.
-Do they have any idea what caused it all?
There's rumors. There are theories, like mad theories, but...

is what got us into this mess in the first place.

I understand. There is people in town who still check their mailbox every morning even though there hasn't been mail in forever.
-It's a fugue state.
It's like a what?
-Oh, it's like when you forget everything. And you're in this weird state. You don't realize anything
that's happened to you before. You seem normal in every other way.

No, I don't think any baby should be unwanted. ... I want it. I don't think I can lose anything else, Nell. ... I don't think the kid is responsible for the parents' actions. Anyway, how could this baby
even be mine? What does that mean? It's its own person.

There are many rumors, some suggest a terrorist targeting our power supply... It seems
at least 300 million people are now without power. Back up generators... No word yet... Millions are still without power. No subways, elevators, airports... Alright, how long have human beings been around?
-What?
Seriously... How long have human beings been around on earth? 100... 200,000 years. Right? How long have we had electricity? Right. You see what I'm saying? This, all this. This is all we have. We have each other. We have plenty of food. We know how to get more. It's just not safe here anymore.
===
No. If you've gotta go, you gotta go.
-But Eva, we're the only family either one of us has. We need to stick together.
Hey, hey, hey. We both made our choices. Bye, Nelly. Hey, I'm always gonna be your sister.
