From the movies I've seen of his, Italian director Luca Guadagnino ("Call Me By Your Name") seems to follow the equation of beautiful people + beautiful places= beautiful film. Set on a small Italian island, "A Bigger Splash" is about a rock star (Tilda Swinton) who has lost her voice and is living with her boyfriend (Beligan actor Matthias Schoenaerts) when her ex, a record producer (Ralph Fiennes) and his sultry daughter (a sultry Dakota Johnson) show up to disrupt their sedentary lifestyle. Manohla Dargis aptly called this "lifestyle pornography," but it's pretty and charming enough to make you forget its flaws. Fiennes let's it all hang out (literally) and it's an effusive, over the top performance for an actor better know for brooding intensity. Tilda Swinton, who already looks like a rock star, gives a typically great performance. The other two actors are so dull and goo looking that you almost feel sorry for them in the presence of actors of Swinton and Fiennes's caliber. The film takes an unexpected turn in the final act that doesn't entirely work. "Call Me By Your Name" is equally beautiful but has much more emotional heft and nuance. His latest is a remake of the giallo classic "Suspiria," also starring Swinton and Johnson. The title comes from a David Hockney painting.

I suppose this was an interesting flick for the highly artistic folks, but for me, it was just plain boring. The underlying store is very simple, but someone tried to stretch it beyond a reasonable length. Get ready to wear out your fast forward button if you are going to watch the entire thing.

Some damage on the disk I borrowed and a few seconds of skipped film.

Flaccid NON-thriller. Pre-melanoma, there was this pot-boiler with Alain/Romy/Maurice/Jane and their tanned n' tit-tillating buff bodies. In this post-melanoma n' overwrought remake... Ralph/Tilda/Mathias/Dakota look pale and in need of body trainers. RF at least did his gamest best to start with peek-a-wee wee, mooning, then full monty, IF this is yer cup-a-pee. For more psycho-thrill, check out Francois Ozon's Swimming Pool with Charlotte Rampling (who also did a full monty with an Olympia pose), and Ludivine Sagnier, Charles Dance, etc. Also Purple Noon with Delon and Maurice Ronet, later remade as the Incredible Mr. Ripley with Jason Bourne (what's his name) and Jude Law in the leads.

Needs salt. Stale ingredients. Maybe take a bite, but toss.

Couldn't finish. After scene in the pool, I threw up my hands and said enough is enough.
Wish I had paid more attention to all the negative posts on this supposed artistic movie.
Really over the top silliness.

Absolute drivel

La Piscine was a starring vehicle for Alain Delon and Romy Schneider; it was really a lot of fun to watch. 50 years later we get this mess of a movie with two charismatic actors--Fiennes and Swinton--and a stupid plot that doesn't pass muster. Swinton as a rock singer reduced to whispering owing to laryngeal blow-out? nonsense. Fiennes as a producer endlessly reminiscing about his glory days with the Stones? more nonsense. The supporting cast is pretty awful, especially the detective. You may ignore this one without feeling any guilt at missing a "prestige" picture.

I thought this movie was pretty cool. Loved the 4 main characters. Not sure why so many people disliked it. Slow yes, but you just want to know what was going to happen next. It's keep me interested.

Overall pretty boring, too many dark scenes where you can't see anything (what's with this love affair with directors shooting in pitch black lately?) It's getting very annoying!! Apart from a few funny scenes, not really worth watching.
