One trick of a really good storyteller is to grab the reader with a compelling beginning. An opening sentence about a man realizing that he’s drowning and his anger about it definitely qualifies. Hooked—right from the start.

The book only gets better as said drowning man staggers from the sea into the fiery kiss of a woman he thinks is a mermaid…and on page nine, no less! That’s kicking things into gear from the get-go. The rest of the story does not disappoint. The romance spirals credibly into a forbidden romance between a marquess and a smuggler’s widow. Making the female lead in this romance in question a woman of sexual experience and clear headed about what she wants puts a great deal of salty sweetness into this romantic novel. She’s under no illusions about this man marrying her and she doesn’t want marriage anyway.

The romantic innocent here is—quelle surprise!—the marquess himself. He goes reeling from a broken heart into the bed of a luscious, robust beauty and he’s considerably confused about his sudden change of emotions. Is he that fickle? Doesn’t he know his own heart? What was he thinking, going for a swim in rough waters anyway?

There are secrets, lies and considerable intrigue, as you would expect about a nobleman in disguise and a woman whose previous partner was involved in illicit deeds. But the switching of gender roles and the viewpoints of the various people around them (and an unexpected lgbtq romance) render this reading a genuine pleasure in the Harlequin bookshelf.
