I liked it quite a bit. Stayed with me for a long time. I can't argue with many of the comments, such as the painfulness of the dialogue and the shallowness of the main character. But I saw a lot of depth in the movie. More a kind of horror/sci-fi. Lots to think about and explore.

What is amazing about this soporific film is that it actually got funding to be animated, completed, produced, and distributed.

I've re-thought my original comments and added a star to my original rating. I didn't enjoy the film at all, probably because I was expecting something more enjoyable. But, it's not a film to enjoy--the dialogue is painfully superficial, and there is not a single likeable character. And that might be the point. The guy is a smooth-talking predator, and the woman is a willing victim. The peripheral characters are just voyeurs. I think, on reflection, that it's fairly well crafted. I wish, however, that the filmmakers had switched the genders of the main characters, so it wouldn't feel so much like another story about how middle-aged men are predators and young women are victims. Still, the fact that the film is still fresh in my mind a week after watching it says something about the film being worth watching. Just don't watch it for enjoyment.

Absolutely hated this film - pointless - could not care about the egocentric male character - somehow profanity seems more objectionable coming from the mouth of a "cartoon". Run do not walk away from this stop action movie mess.

A horrid, ugly and misogynistic film. The digital characters were weird and ugly. The digital voices, which made male and female voices sound the same, were ugly. Basically the film was about a successful worshipped male who, when out of town on business, got a vulnerable young woman drunk and then got her into bed, cheating on his wife. He promised her love and a future, but it was all a lie. Yet somehow we are supposed to get the message that this is or was love? And that everyone needs love and so it is OK for men to be promiscuous and cheat on their familes and to use and exploit women? Blech. Should have called it Anomie.

I did not watch very much of this movie. Not something I liked.

3-1/2 Stars
I've really liked many of CK's films. And I'd heard a lot about this one. Now that I've seen it, I admire the approach ("same" vs "unique" voices) and technical artistry of bringing these figures into emotional life. But I found myself giving a shrug after it ended. Maybe I'm jaded -- or maybe this film would've carried much more power 2 decades ago, before stop motion approaches became more common for telling dramatic stories.

Guess I didn't get it. I thought it was kind of ridiculous.

lukasevansheman's comments (below this) nail the movie. I would add that the movie points out the importance of brief, serendipitous events --- how they can bring happiness or even transformation into our lives.

Lisa: "It's an anomaly, right? I learned that word in your book. I like that word. Anomaly. I like the way it sounds and I like what it means. I feel like an anomaly. Before I used to know there was a word for it, it made me feel bad to be different. Now I kind of like it. Sometimes. I mean, not a lot, but sometimes. It makes me special, sort of. You know what I mean?"
Michael: "Anomalisa."
