Grand melodrama! Nazi horrors! Secret homosexual relationships! Inter-class marriage! Lots and lots of sheep! A Place to Call Home has all this and the luminous and talented Marta Dusseldorp to boot. She plays Sara Adams, a nurse with a mysterious past returning to her native Australia after 20 years in Europe where she converted to Judaism, fought in the Resistance and suffered quite a bit in other ways that I won't reveal here. Sara is steely and strong. She's not afraid to shoot a horse with a broken leg or sucker punch someone in the solar plexus with the butt end of a rifle if the situation calls for it. What a woman! Yes, the show is a soap opera but it's a soap opera with an Aussie accent. It's really quite wonderful.

Oh, this is so soppy, yet I watch it for lack of anything else I suppose. The realism is Australia '50's, anti-Semitism, no mention of Aborigines, stuck in the English class system, & fear of religions other than Anglican. Gee, pretty much like US & UK at that time. I've seen Marta D in a modern, very gritty series & what a difference in character portrayal. I do like her character.

A soap opera that telegraphs all its plot lines. Unsubtle and shallow characters. The best thing is the use of 50's music to make sardonic comments on the melodrama.

I really enjoyed the season, interesting and engaging storylines. I have a soft spot for Roy, I love his nickname for Sarah, calls her Missy - as in sassy one or to be cheeky. I enjoy this type of genre and plan on watching the complete series.

An excellent series which takes in class differences and conformity to the mores of society; anti-Semitism (but no mention of the aborigines); and the problem of homosexuality.

Character-propelled story line. Talented actors. The personal impact of WW II is compelling. Interesting to see the parallels between Australia and U.S. in this time period (post WW II). Well done. Finally some strong and interesting female characters!

Wonderful series. I am anxiously waiting for season 2. I particularly like how the character of Olivia becomes stronger and is able to stand up for what she believes. I would very much recommend this series.

Very good series from Australia.
The series revolves around the Bligh family and those who come into their orbit especially our main character, nurse Sarah Adams.
The series is set in the early 1950's and is reminiscent of the 50's melodrama's that looked below the surface of families to see what was really there.
The Bligh's are a successful, connected, rich family but there are secrets and emotional turmoil.
Not everything is as it appears.
The family drama is set against the changing times of the 50's where roles are being examined and questioned.
Social norms, class and behaviour is looked at, there is racism towards Sarah as she is Jewish but there is no reference to the ugly open intolerance and racism towards the Aborigines that was rampant back then. Australia is presented as a totally white country.
Much care is put into recreating the fifties style and look. The clothes are amazing with many beautiful outfits throughout.
Our main character Sarah is a strong woman and as the series unfolds it is revealed what she went through to survive. She has secrets too.
Four stars!
