Another pairing of the good girl/bad boy trope. Once again, the canny author plays against type. The good girl isn’t all that good and the bad boy isn’t all that bad.

A smart author understands that people are a combination of various qualities. People who are utterly without conscience are as boring as folks who are complete saints. Such characters may provide color but you couldn’t stand reading about them for long. That’s probably why they tend to get killed off in the narrative.

Boone Walker and Melinda Winston are just the lively antidotes you could wish for in this story. Melinda gets by on her charm and winsome beauty; she’s an accomplished coquette, having learned to turn her advantages to good use. But she doesn’t perform this way to exert power . She chafes at the role of the proper miss and is annoyed by men who see her as nothing more than an ornament to be admired and worshipped. Just read how she disarms an armed and dangerous outlaw using only her wits and you’ll get a taste of just how capable Melinda can be under fire.

The male lead in this story is no less gripping. Boone Walker is at a crux in his life. Should he stay on the path of disgrace because it’s all he knows—or should he seek out the redemption that Melinda tacitly promises? His struggle is no less profound than Melinda’s and the author really gets us into the heads of her romantic couple. Theirs was a rocky beginning, filled with danger and threat, and you breathlessly flip through the pages hoping that they’ll both get their happy ending and ride into the sunset together.
