Chicago bar owner Karl Bender stumbles upon a time-travelling worm hole in his closet. With his best friend Wayne, Karl develops a side business selling access to people who want to travel back in time to listen to their favorite bands. It's a pretty ingenious plan, until Karl, intending to send Wayne to 1980, transports him back to 980 instead. Distraught that he can't bring his friend back, he approaches brilliant, prickly, overweight astrophysicist Lena Geduldig. While they work on getting Wayne back, Karl and Lena fall in love-- with time travel, and each other.

I liked the idea of this book and thought it would be a fun and silly romp, and it was. But it was also so much more. I thought the question I would think about was what band would I go see but as the book progresses, the tone shifts toward the repercussions of time travel on the universe and personal realities, particularly on love and "happily ever after". If you love someone in part because of the pain they suffered in their life before meeting you, would you try to take that pain away if you could? Even if it made them into a fundamentally different person and ruined your chance to be together?

Time-travel! Loved it: going back in time to see bands you loved before or missed. But you never know how a random comment can change a person's life and history.
