This book is placed in the medieval times in which the men are supposed to learn how to be knights to protect their castles and thrones. The women go out to learn how to be ladies and sorceresses( if men choose to they can become priests and sorcerers). So, Alanna Of Trebond and her brother Thom are twins. Thom being more soft and connected with the gift of magic and Alanna being more skilled with her foot work, they both decide to part on their ways that they wish to be (Alanna a knight and Thom a sorcerer). Alanna being a girl, she desguised herself as a man and goes on her journey of knight hood and becomes a page at eleven years old.
Alanna and Twin Tomm have the gift, Alanna is scardd willl not be able to control it while Tomm loves it and wishes he did not have to go to knight school. Alanna loves the sword and fighitng so she goes to learn to fight in thom's place and he goes to learn magic. Alanna finds her heart conflicted knowing, the boyies give her a hard time and we see the troubles she face as a girl
