While I agree this is an extremely well-made film with exceptional attention to detail by both production and performance, what struck me was the depiction of Fischer's sensitivity to his environment and how that may have contributed more to his "madness" and thwarted his "genius" and the understanding of him by others.

Excellent film to watch. Macguire and Schreiber performed a great acting. The chess tournament was watched by a lot of peoples in America and Soviet Union. In fact it was more than a match of chess between 2 genius minds, but a , a political powerful manipulations and competition between 2 nations and the obsession to win...... at any cost. The mental pressure issues also that needed to be address efficiently earlier in Bobby Fisher"s carrier. a definitively a movie to see.

Directed by Edward Zwick in 2014, this American docudrama depicts Bobby Fischer's challenge against top Soviet chess grandmasters during the Cold War, which culminates in the 1972 World Chess Championship match versus Boris Spassky in Reykjavík, Iceland.
The film starts with Bobby Fischer (1943-2008) in a paranoid state, showing him worried because, Bobby believes, he is being spied upon by the Soviets.
After forfeiting his title as World Champion, Fischer became reclusive and sometimes erratic, disappearing from both competitive chess and the public eye.
In 2004, he was arrested in Japan and held for several months for using a passport that had been revoked by the U.S. government.
Eventually, he was granted an Icelandic passport and citizenship by a special act of the Icelandic Althing, allowing him to live in Iceland until his death in 2008.
At the end the film says that Bobby's mental condition has been deteriorated probably because of his childhood traumas (?).
It would be much more interesting if the film delved into his mental problems.

Rated 6/10. What a sad life Fischer led. Maguire seems to do a reasonable job chronicling his life.

An equally sad ending.

Oh, my goodness! I remember when all that with the chess matches, cold war, Watergate, Bay of Pigs was going on and my kids were being taught to duck under their desks!

In his teens, my son tried to teach me chess but, sigh, my mind just did not travel there.

Anyway, this is a very good film and I am delighted to see that it was filmed in Montreal at our expense.

The Quebec crews are just perfect.

The script well written and Messrs. Maguire, Schreiber et al perfect casting.

Thank you EPL for having this in our library.

I remember all the excitement about the Fischer-Spassky tournament in 1970, but did not know of the American chess wizard's idiosyncrasies which eventually became full-blown psychosis. Fischer's mental torment is fascinating to observe in this, as are the reactions of those who had been helping him in his career.
The political aspect (this was not Fischer vs Spassky in many minds but the US against the Soviet Union) adds another interesting dimension. Liev Schreiber plays a very laid-back Boris Spassky.

Story of Bobby Fischer and his chess match with Boris Spassky. Interesting to watch; felt sorry for Fischer and those who had to deal with him.

I tried to like this- but did not. I think that you need to be very interested in either chess or the cold war or preferably both to really care about this film. Visually repetitive, bleak and boring, the story of someone slowly who is hard to be with (and to watch) losing his ability to cope with people and the world and he plays chess a lot. I fell asleep after an hour and then went up to bed, my husband kept on with it and did like it in the end, but he said it was his interest in chess that made it appealing.

Have to say I disagree with most of the other posts. I found "Searching for Bobby Fischer" a much better movie. This was ok, and made me read up on Bobby Fischer, but overall just an average movie.

You see, the Russians are like boa constrictors. If you do nothing, they strangle you to death. But if you confuse them, you attack them from everywhere, then all they can do
is react. Now here, you see, I got my machine gun lined up, bearing down on the king. Now he tries to defend himself. I sacrifice my rook. And now the real attack begins. ... Check. Check. Take. ... No, this tournament, like all tournaments, is about winning. So... Okay, well. Rook takes bishop. Of course. Now, he thinks he's safe, but I've been developing a plot to kill his king. You see, my rook is sitting there waiting, forgotten about in the background. I bring him into the hunt. Now the king flees. Even his beloved queen can't do anything. She's just sitting there, watching... Mmm-hmm. ...as the noose tightens. And finally... He sees the end.

So, this game...It's a rabbit hole. After only four moves, there's more than 300 billion options to consider. There's more 40-move games than there are stars in the galaxy. So, it can take you very close to the edge.
===
The chess you've been playing is really inspired. It's almost all theory and memorization. People think there are all these options, but there's usually one right move. Of course, in the end, there's no place to go.
