From the New York Times bestselling author of One Good Dog comes a tale of love, loss, and loyalty.
Rick Stanton was once a promising professional baseball player, but war changed everything. Rick returns home to his wife Francesca, shattered-but it was not just body and spirit he sacrificed for the war. He and Francesca volunteered their beloved dog, Pax, for the army's K-9 Corps, not knowing if they'd ever see him again...

"Will call for a few tissues as readers smile through tears."- Best Friends magazine

Keller Nicholson is the soldier who fought in the war with Pax by his side, and the two have the kind of profound bond that can only be forged in battle. Pax is the closest Keller has to a sense of family, and he can't bear the thought of returning him to the Stantons. Instead, an arrangement is made: Keller will work as Rick's live-in aide.As they try to build a new life out of the ashes, Keller and Francesca struggle to ignore their growing attraction to each other, and Rick, believing that he can no longer give Francesca what she needs and wants, quietly plans a way out. All three of them need healing-and Pax, with his unconditional love and unwavering loyalty, may be the only one who can give it to them...and guide them home.

Beautifully written and a wonderful example of Susan Wilson's writing, A Man of His Own details the life and loves of Pax, a brilliant and well loved german shepard mix. Wilson has a remarkable grasp of the inner mind of dogs and writes with passion and pure love for dogs. Pax has amazing adventures first as a loving pet and then later as a war scout, and his bond with his people is profound and will fill your heart with joy and love. A wonderfully written adventure that will pull at your heart strings.

Didn't quite see how this story could have turned out in a good way, but it came together so well. I would like to read more by this author.

I wanted to say that I really enjoyed how well the author conveyed the dog's perspective and also enjoyed the story of how Pax got his name (beautiful). However I couldn't get behind the man loving his dog and being strongly bonded and having the dog volunteered to the war -- that didn't seem right. The love triangle was predictable -- I don't think it would have gone the way it did in real life in any way. There is a good story here - it was just missing some major ingrediants in my eyes to make it work best for me.
