The 25th anniversary edition of the #1 New York Times bestseller and Sports Illustrated 's best football book of all time, with a new afterword by the author

Return once again to the timeless account of the Permian Panthers of Odessa--the winningest high-school football team in Texas history. Socially and racially divided, Odessa isn't known to be a place big on dreams, but every Friday night from September to December, when the Panthers play football, dreams can come true.

With frankness and compassion, H. G. Bissinger unforgettably captures a season in the life of Odessa and shows how single-minded devotion to the team shapes the community and inspires--and sometimes shatters--the teenagers who wear the Panthers' uniforms.

This is an interesting look at how important football is to the economically depressed, conservative town of Odessa, Texas. The book mostly follows six players in their senior year, as they hope to lead their team to a state championship. I read the edition with an afterword written 25 years later, and that was actually the most interesting part of the book. I think that's because that's the first time Bissinger really inserts himself into the story and shows his relationships with the players. The other parts of the book have a dry, detached feeling where none of the players feel like a complete person. They are just football players and nothing else, but maybe that's the point.

one of the best sports books ever written, and one of the best looks at the obsessive needs a town places on their children

Heck of a TV series, too. Sorry to see it end.

If there's a better book about the way sports obsession can simultaneously exalt and ruin the lives of young men and the society that envelops them, I haven't read it.
