A fascinating, often shocking documentary. I went in knowing very little about Scientology and could hardly believe what I learned. Riveting, well-produced, and highly recommended.

Best movie about Scientology I've ever seen.

Directed by Alex Gibney in 2011, this 120-minute documentary devles into a mind-boggling and horrible story of the Church of Scientology, which is a multinational network and hierarchy of numerous ostensibly independent but interconnected corporate entities and other organizations devoted to the practice, administration and dissemination of Scientology, a new cult religious movement.
Though it has attained some credibility as a religion in many countries, Scientology has also been described as both a cult and a commercial enterprise.
Some of the Church's actions also brought scrutiny from the press and law enforcement.
It has been noted to engage in harassment and abuse of civil courts to silence its critics, by identifying as Fair Game people it perceives as its enemies.
Several Scientology members were convicted for their involvement in the church's theft of government documents.
Some scientologists were also convicted of fraud, manslaughter and tampering with witnesses.
It is an informative and anti-brainwashing documentary.

Absolutely fascinating. I watched this in 30-minute increments because I would fall down the research rabbit hole, looking for more information. Really well done!

Absorbing adaptation of the Lawrence Wright expose about the cash-cow lunacy that is Scientology. The creepy Tom Cruise segment alone is worth the look, but the entire documentary is jaw-dropping. The saddest and most shocking passage relates (through the saga of former John Travolta handler Spanky Taylor) the plight of the babies and small children taken from their Sea Org parents and placed in Sea Cadet confinement. And that this organization was able to bully the IRS-the IRS!!!--into submission tells you a lot about the reality of this so-called religion. The Mafia has nothing on the "Church" of Scientology.
Fascinating and deeply disturbing.

It is quite interesting to find out more information about Scientology. If you have questions about whether this is a cult or in fact a religion this documentary is a great start.

Not much depth can be plumbed of a criminal cult in two hours. The vaguenes, the amorphousness, the secrecy of Scientology all serve to obscure the truth. Nevertheless, this documentary – based on interviews with insiders – pulls back the curtain to reveal how a single man, L Ron Hubbard, can engineer through sheer imagination and energy a mind-control cult, which has come to include human trafficking, slavery, and forced abortions. His successor, Ron Miscavige, is if anything a more ruthless and cynical version of Hubbard. Fortunately, the days of Scientology are coming to a close, though how it will ultimately unwind is hard to say.

We are attributing to this supposed documentary a level of truth that it does not deserve. The broader picture of Scientology starts with Dianetics The Modern Science of Mental Health which tells you more about the mind than you can find anywhere else on earth. One definition of Psychotic is the unrelenting desire to harm or destroy. I question the sanity of Gibney and crew.

WOW! You think you can kind of understand how cults prey on the emotionally vulnerable, but this goes so much farther than that. Many parts of how this cult is organized reminded me so much of the Nazis. The way the Nazis manipulated thier SS guards and kept them loyal throughout is quite similar to how these "members of the Church" volunteered their time and energy to Scientology.

The on camera testimonies of ex-members, including the Oscar winner filmmaker/screen-writer Paul Haggis, and archive footage/videos were credible allegations that Scientology has been a ruthless global scam - and a clever one by auditing and documenting the private lives of members who became fearful that their secrets could be made public.

“In the United States, constitutional guarantees of religious liberty protect the church from actions that might otherwise be considered abusive or in violation of laws in human trafficking or labor standards.”
― Lawrence Wright, Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief

Snake oil "Clear" concept:
When L. Ron Hubbard first wrote "Dianetics," he thought it was a tremendous psychological breakthrough, so much so that he would be recognized. He wrote letters to the American Psychological Association. They couldn't make heads or tail of his ideas. To them, it was like psychological folk art. For instance, he would talk about "clear." That means that the individual has erased his reactive mind-- <i>his unconscious mind is gone-- and he is totally alert and totally capable. Once you've taken away all these traumatic memories, from this life and previous ones, then you are clear. Someone who had a perfect memory, who was never ill. Your eyesight would be better. We tested people before Scientology processing and after Scientology processing, and uniformly found that their IQ had raised. We are making such individuals, we're making them regularly, and we're making them routinely.
