"You have to read this." -- Rainbow Rowell, bestselling author of Eleanor & Park

In his follow-up to tthe New York Times bestselling author of Every Day, andDavid Levithan, coauthor of bestsellers Will Grayson, Will Grayson (with John Green) and Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (with Rachel Cohn) , crafts a novel that the Los Angeles Times calls "open, frank, and ultimately optimistic."

Based on true events--and narrated by a Greek Chorus of the generation of gay men lost to AIDS-- Two Boys Kissing follows Harry and Craig, two seventeen-year-olds who are about to take part in a 32-hour marathon of kissing to set a new Guinness World Record. While the two increasingly dehydrated and sleep-deprived boys are locking lips, they become a focal point in the lives of other teens dealing with universal questions of love, identity, and belonging.

I liked the idea behind the story, and enjoyed a lot of the characters. I really liked that Harry and Craig have broken up and are doing this as friends. I had no idea that a kiss that long would be so harrowing (they are not allowed to sit, use the restroom or be aided by anyone else). But the greek chorus did become a bit preachy. And Levithan (it is read by the author) has a way of reading it that makes it seems as though every sentence is the most important thing in the world! I might have enjoyed a lighter reading more...but then it isn't light material really.

This moving story is narrated by a Greek chorus of gay men who died of AIDS a generation ago and who attempt to speak to the multiple gay characters to warn, admonish and celebrate them as they try to comprehend their lives and their place in the world. Craig and Harry, ex-boyfriends, are at the center of the story as they attempt to set a world’s record for the longest kiss. Through social media and word of mouth, their kiss is soon heard around the community and world and we get a look at other gay couples and individuals at different stages in their lives and their relationships as they react to or are affected by “the kiss”. In this audio version, the author reads his own work with emotion and explains his source of ideas for the book. He introduces us to many kinds of love-that of friends, family and gay lovers. It was a unique way of thinking about so many different kinds of relationships and how much things have changed in the last 20 years, but how far we still have to go.

This book has caught everyone’s attention (as Levithan’s books often do). The story centers around an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records longest kiss (over 32 hours) by ex-boyfriends Craig and Harry in protest of a hate crime. Add to that the love story of Ryan and transgendered Avery, Peter and Neil (a new couple ready to take the next step) and Cooper, a runaway obsessed with gay hook-up apps and the story is full of interesting and well rounded characters. To add to the complexity of the story it is narrated by a chorus of “shadow uncles” (gay men of the AIDS generation) offering up opinions and advice. It is a very unique read and one that is sure to have plenty of fans.
