Never before have there been such charming baking recipes that actually invite you to draw and paint on your dessert. Rosie Alyea, the blogger behind Sweetapolita, has an amazing knack for creating interactive sweets. The magic of her designs is not in piping frosting or sticking on candies, but in how they're each an art project, with the baked good your canvas and icing a paint palette.

Rosie Alyea fell in love with designing cakes when she attended the acclaimed Bonnie Gordon School in Toronto. Since 2010, her "Sweetapolita" blog has attracted many followers who delight in her cheery, artistic baked goods. Alyea's fans will thus delight in the long overdue "The Sweetapolita Bakebook" and those who have never seen the blog will soon wonder how they survived so long without making rainbow cake!

Recipes range from the simple to the intricate; more complicated ones can seem overwhelming but, even if you don't apply every artistic detail to your own creations, following the foundation recipes then decorating as you please will still yield delicious results. Alyea's rich, moist chocolate cake proves entirely worth the effort and her sugar cookies take a basic, often drab baked good to a whole new level. Many recipes also have an interactive element so, if you bake cookies for a kids' party, for example, guests can get creative and decorate the baking with a personal touch.

If your pantry lacks cake decorating ingredients and tools, start-up may seem pricey because of the cost of colourings, cutters etc but the investment will pay off after a few special events. So, if you love making unique desserts or want to learn, you'll find plenty of motivation in the mouth-watering recipes and stunning colour photos of "Sweetapolita."
