Poor Magician Thane isn't heartless, per se, but his heart just isn't the right place at the moment. But don't be disheartened; his loyal apprentice Ceony is just the sweetheart to help him out. (I'm sorry.) (No I'm not.)

My dear friend JB recommended this darling and charming read and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

A trigger warning for more squeamish readers: There's rather a surprising amount of gore. You've been warned.

It's a light and quirky little read, one that will give you some warm fuzzies. The author's creativity combined with their simple writing makes this read easy, like a bedtime story. Go read it; it's sweet. I just put the sequel on hold at the library and am looking forward to receiving it.

I recall paper-based magic from Richard Kearns' 1983 short story "The Power of the Press" and this novel extends that intriguing concept. There's a vague hint of Cornelia Funke's Inkheart trilogy here too. This goes off-track semi-romantically though with the heroine prodigy wandering around her teacher's disembodied heart/memory like a surreal fun-house for what seemed like half the book. I'm prepared to discount that in a teen novel and am curious about the rest of this series.

I really enjoyed this book. It had everything I like - magic, quests, and romance, all set in the Victorian times. Some of it is kind of gory, not too violent, but it involves a lot of blood (Ceony ends up in a human heart, after all), so it that makes you squirm, you might not like it as much. I think this one could have been longer and more detailed; some parts I found a bit confusing. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I don't normally read "Fluffy" books and tried to find a book that I might enjoy. This book definitely wasn't what I expected. An unusual journey into a heart. I thought it was a good light read but I was a bit disappointed with the "everything gets resolved and tied with a big pink bow ending" that most fluffy books seem to follow. I wouldn't have read this book if it hadn't been for the Adult Summer Reading Club and I am glad to have read it.

This is a tale of which brings a feeling of wanting more of the characters and the cheesy plots that is to behold.

The plot of the story isn't quite as thrilling but when it is about the characters it shines out the rest.

Title/Author: The Paper Magician by Charlie Holmberg
Read by: Anna/Teen Librarian
Summary: A young student magician is forced to bond to paper as her magical force because not enough students choose paper. Much as she would have rather bonded to glass or metal, she begins to see that paper isn't so bad, until her teacher is attacked and left without a heart. Now, she must act fast, without knowing everything, in order to save the teacher she may have come to love.
Series/Standalone: book one in a trilogy
Genre/sub-genre: fantasy romance
Diversity: no
Relatable characters: yes
Would I recommend this to others?: yes
Personal thoughts: This was good. Though there were parts to this I thought went on too long, I did enjoy it all the way through and it was a relatively quick read, appropriate for both teens and adults.

Not what I expected at all, great read for Teens and Adults who are teens at heart. I love all three books. Great series.

I originally thought this was a teen novel. And..I still think it might be. She lost me in the last 1/3 of the book. It was a little too sappy for me. But I love the world she created. I see much potential here and will read future books in the series.

This book not only has a TON of good vocabulary words and figurative language, it also has a very interesting and creative plot. I loved it from page 1.

If you love Harry Potter, you will love this story!! I will say, its supposed to be for kids and adults, but I don't know that I would read this to my children. But it is a wonderful story.
