I have read a LOT of mystery books and this was one of the most boring and unpleasant. i know the Scandinavian mysteries are often slow but usually they have some sympathetic or at least interesting characters. I cannot recommend this book. I skipped to the end after reading just a few chapters, which is something i almost never do.

Tommy, a 16-month-old boy with Down's syndrome, dies from an apparent drowning. Was this just a tragic accident or does the calm, composed, self-absorbed, shallow-minded mother have something to hide? Chief Inspector Sejer is haunted and frustrated by this case; he wants to ensure justice for Tommy but finds it increasingly difficult to break the mother's story.
This book is an unhurried police procedural. Good character development delivers a "slow-burn" that makes you want to find out the truth. My chief complaint is the final paragraph. An author has the privilege of taking a story anywhere he or she wants, but I think the last paragraph in this novel is unrealistic.

Alternately like watching paint dry and watching someone picking a scab. With a touch of absurdity thrown in for good measure.
