Read this book back when it 1st came out in 1988, and still love skimming thru it. Good read in what...could be-- though I pray not-- be Cold War II. I lived thru the 1st Cold War, and pray that there won't be a 2nd.

Very good book. After Without Remorse and Rainbow Six, this is the best in the Jack Ryan Series. Has three of my favorite "Ryan Universe" characters in it: John Clark and the Foleys. I only rate this as 16 and older due to the fact that someone younger than that may have difficulty following it. If someone younger can handle the complex plot, so be it.

The book is well written but quite heavy on the technical issues side and sometimes that makes the plot slow down a lot

Perhaps a bit too tech heavy, but then again, Clancy loves writing that, but the spy versus spy high stakes nature of the plot works well.
