The subject matter, the free people of color was interesting. However, I had a difficult time with the style of writing and was not able to finish the book. I might try to find the movie.

The most stunningly beautiful work of an author much more famous for her supernatural and erotic fiction, this book follows the stories of four beautiful and gifted young people. Obsessive, wounded Marcel; proud, rule-bound Richard; sweet, strong Anna Bella; and lovely Marie, who seems so priveleged and who is in fact so powerless and whose real self is utterly invisible to everybody but Richard; all are completely unforgettable.
