Isaacson really knows how to flesh out his subjects so thoroughly that you feel you know them. I love the details of Einstien's personality, the quotes, the family background and the inside look at his choices as an adult, including his reactions to the political turmoil of the time in which his being Jewish presented certain challenges. I also appreciated the descriptions of scientific concepts that Isaacson presented so well. Recommended.

This book provides a good review of Einstein's life - his work, his relationships with associates, his family issues, his philosophies, and in general what made him tick. The review of the description of his work is necessarily high level. In the various events, clearly Einstein was a non-conformist which was a strength and weakness. We are fortunate that he found his way. His motivation in physics was an intense curiosity about physics and innate ability to intuit the nature of physics that allowed him the ability to uncover many key discoveries that others could not deduce. It was this intuition that led him to think about physics along the lines of fields (e.g. gravitational and electromagnetic). With quantum mechanics, the probabilistic psi function may have been right but to him was an incomplete description. This incompleteness drove him on an unfullfilled quest of a unified field theory. This book has the good fortune to benefit from some recent relevant findings. One incident that the book missed was the 1947 Shelter Island Conference on the foundations of Quantum Mechanics along the lines of the Solvay conferences assembling the great minds of theoretical physics in one room previously attended. Einstein was invited but declined. I would have appreciated some explanation on this episode.
