Quite an entertaining film when one watches it for the first time (because in subsequent viewing the plot makes no sense). The music is very annoying - and about fifteen years out of date. The stands of plots and subplots, and the viewers speculations (and confirmations and disconfirmations) keep the interest in what become rather likeable criminals.

This is a nearly perfect caper movie with only a couple of small plot holes that you will discover only after multiple viewings. Two of the actors play their parts with real physical injuries. The heroes play a complex con against multiple characters as well as the audience. This film is well-deserving of the multiple awards it received. Newman and Redford are at their best.

I was 16 when I first saw this movie. Just the right age to swoon over Redford and Newman (never mind their ages). Also, I'd never heard Scot Joplin music before. After the movie I ran right out and bought the piano book and spent the next year hammering out ragtime on the piano at home. Drove my family nuts. Great movie. Lots of memories.

For the commenter who quibbled with the fact that the FBI guy turned out to be a con man too and that was just "not believable"...don't you get it that the FBI "office" was a bunch of guys in on the con too? Remember, Gondorf said that after what happened to Luther he could only get 2 or 3 hundred guys to get in on the con against Lonnegan. Also, lighten up!! It's a movie, you need to suspend disbelief.

Loads of fun and a great cast. But i kinda agree with akirakato's comment. The con is too elaborate to be believed. More of a movie within a movie than a caper film. Still a very "entertaining" watch for the poker scene alone. Also the Joplin score.

classic great chemistry between the actors

This is a 1973 American caper film set in September 1936, involving a complicated plot by two professional grifters to con a mob boss.
Although it is such an entertaining film, it is too contrived that FBI agent Polk turns out to be a con man, too.
It's a profoundly foolish surprise!----funny, but kinda letdown!

After seeing the reference to the film in "Better Call Saul" S1E4, it was fun to see this film again. Incredible attention to detail, really makes this film a success, even we the audience get conned in the end.

During the latter half of the Depression two petty con-artists bite off more than they can chew when they unwittingly steal a sizable sum of cash belonging to a vengeful mobster. After one partner is murdered for his part in the theft, the remaining man escapes to Chicago where he hooks up with an acquaintance of his dead friend; a one-time master grifter now living in a squalid waterfront dive. Together the two plot a most ingenious revenge on the gangster responsible for their friend’s death. As their elaborate scam takes shape, involving rigged poker games and fake bookie joints, nothing is quite what it appears to be...but will it be enough to fool a master criminal? This is a briskly paced, colourful tale featuring wonderful performances from its star-studded cast while the detailed sets, costumes and musical score bring 1930s Chicago to life with a vibrancy that is part fact, part wistful nostalgia. The ending may not come as a great surprise, Hill offers up too many clues beforehand, but the journey there is thoroughly enjoyable.
