Prior to the mid-19th century, books for children were religious tracts or morality tales. Around 1850 publishers began to produce children's fiction that was intended primarily as entertainment, and the genre grew rapidly in magazines, dime novels and hardcover books. They were a very popular part of juvenile literature until the advent of television in the 1950s.Beginning with an historical introduction and literary analysis, this book provides a comprehensive bibliography of children's fiction series from 1850 through 1950. Each entry includes the name of the series, authors, illustrators, and publishers, along with the titles of individual books in the series and their year of publication.
