The 8th book in the Sir John Fielding series pulls in Black Jack Bilbo and Jimmy Bunkins as well as several Bow Street Runners. Sir John is asked to investigate charges against the magistrate in the town of Deal, on the coast of the English Channel. This becomes a major project to defeat the local "Owling Trade" (smuggling) and solve several murders. Clarissa participates, because Lady Fielding is nursing her sick mother, so Clarissa cannot be left on her own. She contributes substantially to the gathering of information. Altogether this was a very entertaining book and several avenues of further developments have opened by the end of it.
