A chance viewing of the 1930s movie adaptation of this title put this reviewer in mind of the Winslow Homer painting The Fog Warning. Coming across the actual painting the next month in Boston, made me want to revisit Kipling's work. The story is a standard, spoiled boy meets adversity becomes a man but it's Kipling's portrayal of the then contemporary Gloucester fishing industry at work that catches one's attention. Men set out in schooners to the fishing banks and went out in small boats to catch fish then return to the schooner with their catch. It is hard almost brutal work that can turn as shown by The Fog Warning to life threatening in an instant.

Hmm.... kwsmith have you by chance seen the movie Captains Courageous with Spencer Tracy? Terrific-- by far one of my favorite movies. Right up there with Gunga Din. ;)
