Clearly the production budget was generous for this volume and others in the series (see Oceans, GC611). The photos are abundant, diverse in their subject matter, beautifully layed out on the page, and printed with lively color. Some nice, though not very detailed maps are included. Fifteen contributors (identified, with qualifications) have written on animal and plant life, people of the forests, and the future. Myers is identified as a consulting editor; he may be lending the cachet of his status in the scientific community to a work pretty much shaped by the skillful staff at Rodale. But that's how many such books are made. The lack of a bibliography is inexplicable. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
