Filmed quite well. Very close to the novel. Hugh Grant is sweet as the shy Edward. The women did their parts beautifully. Alan Rickman comes across as an attractive romantic who wants to put the sisters first.

Emma Thompson hews very closely, if not completely, to the dialogue of Jane Austen's novel; her adaptation constitutes a high recommendation of faithfulness to literary sources. One has to question the overwhelming diffidence of virtually…

A lush, beautiful, romantic Jane Austin tale, starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslett and Hugh Grant. This film was nominated for 7 Academy Awards in 1995.

I believe this is the film when Emma Thompson and Greg Wise met. They later married after being together for years. Surprised Greg is not shown as an additional contributor.

VERY GOOD 1995 period drama film directed by Ang Lee and based on Jane Austen's 1811 novel of the same name. The film is centered on older times social restrictions/possibilities of females aspiring for marriage after they become poor…

Whether or not you can be thrilled by a plot that pivots on whether two spinsters marry, incredibly engaging. Writer Emma Thompson plays Elinor superbly. A torrent of visually gorgeous historical detail from start to finish. Be aware…

Great acting, authentic period costumes, and of course, a great story as Jane Austen was a great writer.

Emma Thompson! Kate Winslet! Alan Rickman Yes! This is the first adaptation of a Jane Austen book I ever saw and this has been one of my all time favorite movies since. I love everything there is about this movie; the cast, the way it…

Actress Emma Thompson spent five years writing the script for this film adaptation of a Jane Austin novel. Emma Thompson then stars in this tale of a young woman thinking she has found a suitable mate, who for some unknown reason…

What a beautiful adaptation! Emma Thompson wrote a lovely script and the acting is wonderful. And anything that let Alan Rickman be heroic is good in my book. This is also the one movie where I find Hugh Grant truly tolerable.

I love this movie, so relaxing and romantic. The only negative was Hugh Grant, he seems to play so many characters the same; stammering and fluttering his eyes with a perpetually innocent look on his face. That probably works for him in…

I did enjoy this movie even after reading the book. That's rare. Emma Thompson, although an excellent actress was clearly old in her role of Elinor Dashwood. Dashwood is a young woman between 19-21. Thompson was obviously in her mid…

Abysmal chick flick; "...take away reason and accountability."--Jack Nicholson, As Good As It Gets.

I have watched this movie more times than I care to admit and I still find it as fresh and delightful as ever. A bright Jane Austen adaptation with its Oscar-winning script penned by "Elinor" herself, Emma Thompson.

I enjoyed this very much. Well presented. Strong story. Well acted. If you love a non-fiction story using fiction names and places describing what it was like to live late 1800's you will love this story. That is what Jane Austin…

This is the best version of this story. The casting is excellent, the script wonderful, the locations alone worth the viewing. Alan Rickman demonstrates what quiet, caring, truly romantic hero looks like. Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant are…

Emma Thompson delivers an incredible performance, and her script adaptation perfectly matches the tone of the book. Possibly my favorite Jane Austen adaptation.

Goodness gracious. While I absolutely knew what was going to happen, I couldn't help but cry at Emma Thompson's phenomenal performance. While Mary Ann was selfish and annoying, it is the way she is written and her personality stayed true…

My introduction to Jane Austen, I was so engrossed in this movie that towards the end I remember I burst out crying because I couldn't stand it anymore and I didn't know what was going to happen. I've since gone on to read the books and…

Excellent film. Moves faster than the book. Emma Thompson was fabulous! Great contrast to Kate Winslet: Calm older sister, not as pretty; Vivacious younger sister, super beautiful. And they even kept the little sister in the film!
