The story had a strange eerie atmosphere that worked well to evoke the English countryside and build tension. The author is said to have been inspired by Beowulf and that really came through within the story. If you enjoyed Beowulf, you…

"I would describe this book as a melancholy fantasy. This is a fairytale about the journey of two lovers through the countryside. The problem is that the world surrounds by memory loss fog." - Sasha L.

Even though I found the two elderly characters irritating, the book is beautifully written, if a tad plodding.

While the story's premise is intriguing, I found its construction confusing and its pace excruciatingly slow. It was a good book to read in bed when my goal was to fall asleep. I managed to finish it because I was curious as to how the…

This was a struggle to read. The crafting of individual phrases was generally evocative and pretty, but the story itself was meandering and unclear. Numerous mysteries are stoked with very little reward, having what passes as a 'reveal'…

Can't do it. This is my second attempt to read this book, but I have decided at 73 my time is too valuable to force myself to finish. Kristi & Abby Tabby

Just ok. A bit of an odd story with odd characters.

Well... This book is very hard for me to rate. The premise is intriguing- memory loss of an entire village, with no clear explanation, and no one except the protagonist couple seeming to sense that it's happening. We follow them on their…

The author agrees with the perception that it took him ten years to write this. Seeming to betray a human disappointment, he offers his wife's critique of his first year and a half of his work, 'this will not do'. The final product…

I was caught up with Axl and Beatrice's story from the start. Although its tone is quiet and spare, the story is part quest, part love story, and part mysterious fantasy.

I have never been a fan of fantasy, but this changed forever the day I picked up this book. From the first pages, it was clear to me that I was holding in my hands a true masterpiece. Not only the themes, but the unique complementary…

Although a fiction, I thought this could be a sort of memorable history lesson. Carefully read, and the description of the beings, often told through the characters' perceptions, were telling. Unique choice of wording, so, still found it…

Disappointing. I expected better from an author with his writing credentials. Not up to the standards of other Japanese writers held in similar esteem.

I like to think of this book as the "anti-epic." A tale of knights, swords and dragons told from the human perspective. The themes aren't high fantasy, but thoughtful humanity. A the point of view shifts across characters, we discover that…

It was a slow moving book, but what held my attention was the need to find out what will happen to Axel and Beatrice on their journey to find their son. They met a warrior, a knight (one of King Arthur's) and a weird kid, etc. along their…

I don't usually read fiction but this fantasy was thought-provoking. I had to ask myself, what purpose do the memories I have serve? And what about the ones I've buried?

Travelling through the English countryside in the time of the lord of the rings. Warriors, mystical creatures, a choppy on the road plot where every chapter an entirely new and hazy premise has to be learned for the story to pick up…

This is a marvelous book by one of my favorite authors. In this post-Arthurian tale of a couple in search of their memories, Ishiguro raises the question - are some things best forgotten? Highly recommended.
