This romantic/drama film follows thirteen year old Henry Wheeler, who must deal with the realities and sorrows of adolescence while trying to care for his isolated mother. One day they are out grocery shopping when they encounter a man by the name of Frank Chambers, who claims that he needs their help and convinces them to let him stay in their home. It soon becomes clear that he is an escaped felon. This movie is based on a novel by the same name, and shows the humanity within people who have committed crimes as well as the human need for love and connection. I would rate this turbulent film 4/5 stars and recommend it to those seeking something different.

I knew this was going to be good--look at the cast. And then to see the film unfold? You think it's going one way but it isn't, and that's the joy of watching this film. Beautiful and subtle.
Tender beautiful movie. Excellent measured performances by the three leads combined with the attention to detail for the era and sound track. Includes a surprising level of tension as the plot escalates.
Wonderful movie. James Brolin and Kate Winslett are both brilliant in this adventure romance. I always forget that she is British because she does American accents so well. Nice twist to see the story years later and inspired casting of Tobey Maguire. Worth watching.
"Labor Day" is cleverly written whether it is a true story or not. The cast is strong with good performances by James Brolin and Kate Winslet. The two of them were very convincing in their roles. This is definitely a step ahead of most movies!
Good movie with good acting and suspense! This is definitely not a true story; it's based on a Joyce Maynard fiction novel.
A lovely movie. Kate Winslett is a brilliant actress and played this part beautifully.
Excellent movie. The characters are very convincing and I was very sympathetic to the convict. I loved the ending.
I saw the movie and I had liked it this is based on a true story
but not for children to watch
Loved loved this movie!
Mainly because of it's poetic, romantic pure spirit
There are a couple of points that are a little farfetched spoiler alert!...namely the boy becomes a baker and the fact thatAdele waits 25 years for Wheeler to return, but other than that I thought Josh Brolin and the young boy did a superb job of acting, Kate Winslet was not too bad herself...
a steadily suspenseful, wrenching portrait of love and life and the lasting impact of the connections we make along the way. this is a visually beautiful movie with depth and complexity throughout. I stayed silent through the end credits, with my hand over my heart.
A truly beautiful film, full of love, desire and courage. Love leads us places where we don't expect to appear. This movie was about it. Dramas like this is not often we see. For everyone who likes slow-motion movies and wants to experience love, should watch it. Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin were brilliant as ever!
A neat story of a "broken" Mother & Son. Who become "fixed" when an Escaped Convict comes into their lives.
While the critics gave this film mixed reviews, I tried it out, knowing Kate Winslett and Josh Brolin are two of the finest actors currently making films. I probably liked more than the critics, as it is a good mix of romance and danger. Five minutes before the end, make up your own favorite ending. Your ending may be better than the one that the producers decided on. Early on, I had to ask myself, I know the narrator's voice. The narrator is only in the film for about 30 seconds. See if you can guess who it is. One critic called this genre as a bodice ripper. Look that up in Google.
Call me a romantic. I loved this movie.
2016 - rewatched this movie. Good performances by both Josh Brolin and Cate Blanchett. Well worth the second watch.
A nice to movie to watch. I really enjoyed it. The acting was excellent. Looking back, I guess the story was somewhat predictable, but the direction and acting held your attention. I would definitely watch this movie again.
At times a little scary but overall a movie about something that does happen in real life. Not that people fall in love with escapees but they do fall in love with those who are incarcerated. This movie shows the side of the convict that is human and sensitive. It shows the side of a lonely woman who is vulnerable. Not to mention the child that desires and needs a father figure. Many emotions in are touched in this movie.
The acting was great. I think he capture lacked excitement.
It is definitely a different kind of love story.
I really enjoyed this movie. Acting is excellent and there are some twists in a story that could have been very mundane. Kate Winslet looks less glamorous than I have ever seen her look!
The plot was so contrived of a lonely woman seeking companionship and her son looking for a father figure they welcome into their home an escapee looking to play husband and father. Other than the end, Labor Day seemed to lumber along.
