In this three-part series, we examine "Youngstown Grit." Our prosperity, made possible for many decades by hard work and industry, began to crumble on Monday, September 19, 1977. On that day, Youngstown Sheet and Tube announced the closing of the Campbell Works Plant, causing the immediate layoff of more than 5,000 workers. The months that followed witnessed the loss of many thousands of jobs, the destruction of livelihoods and the deterioration of neighborhoods. This "deindustrialization" will be our topic of discussion. Will hope rise out of the rubble of this tragedy?
