Independent Redistricting Commission Amendment Presentation and Discussion

5:30 PM – 7:00 PM
Boardman

Description

In the November election, voters will consider an amendment to the Ohio Constitution that would change the way voting districts are established. It is intended to end “gerrymandering,” the process by which the political party in power at the time of redistricting establishes districts to expand their power and ensure election of their party’s candidates. The amendment proposes an independent redistricting commission, which would exclude elected officials, political party leaders, and lobbyists from drawing voting districts. Kathleen Gaige, a volunteer for Fair Districts, will provide an overview of how the Independent Redistricting Commission would work, and how it would result in voting districts that do not unduly favor ANY political party, rather establishes districts based on communities of common interests.
